Home School For Non-English Speaking Students
In order to communicate a concept, an efficient medium is needed. Without this medium, abstract concepts such as color, taste, and numbers are practically unintelligible. This is why language is an essential component of human interaction. It is the adhesive which binds people together. The problem of language is readily observable in the presence of a foreigner speaking a foreign tongue. Communicating basic concepts in terms which are alien to a foreigner is a futile and frustrating undertaking; don’t even bother with more complex ideas. Since English is the accepted international language standard, the need to teach it to those who are unfamiliar with it is the first step to learning subjects which are written, voiced, or read in the language. Non-English speakers are finding it more difficult to adjust to traditional classrooms where English, and not their mother tongue, is the norm, and home schooling is a viable alternative in aid for such a difficulty.
There is a double difficulty involved in home schooling non-English speaking students: first, the home school course has to comply with the local regulations of the state or area, and they differ significantly concerning such regulations; second the instructor must be well-versed, if not fluent, in English, and in the language which the student is accustomed to. Translation is particularly crucial when comes to teaching technical concepts and terms, and the instructor must be able to translate a term or idea from one language to another, while keeping the concept intact.
The ideal instructor is a bilingual one, preferably exposed to the nuances and contexts built into the foreign language known by the student, while having a certain mastery of English. The availability for such a home school teacher depend upon the foreign language which must be dealt with; home schooling services usually employ personnel who are at least accustomed to one or more of the popular languages, in addition to English. Bilingual instructors in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and French are more readily available than others. For other languages which are uncommon, wherein the search for an instructor which can speak the language proves to be difficult, resource materials are a second-best option.
If the student is a child or an adolescent, it can learn under the wings of the parent, under the supervision of an instructor. Again, this necessitates that the parent understands terms and ideas in both languages above the rudimentary levels, in order to effectively teach the child. The parent is advised to take an English-language course prior to the home schooling of the child, so that instruction would be more competent and thorough.
Resources abound which can aid in making the instruction process as easy as possible. Bilingual textbooks, audio tapes and CDs, videos, and workbooks are all effective tools for instruction. These resource materials range in difficulty from the essential basics for familiarization, to the fine tuning materials for those who want to gain mastery of English, and consequently understand the subject matter thoroughly. Home schooling is particularly the ideal educational option for non-English speaking students since they can learn subject matters at their own comfortable pace, progressing to the next difficulty level as soon as they have mastered the current one.
