Not For the Budget Conscious – Allied National High
Allied National High School has every reason to take pride in its credentials – it is accredited by two organizations, one is regionally-recognized, and the other from the more extensive national level. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges, just one of the six accrediting associations which evaluate and grant accreditation on the regional level, awarded the school with accreditation (albeit for an interim term); similarly, the Distance Education and Training Council, a national accrediting organization, also recognized Allied National High School as up to par with federal standards of education. Either way you look at it, it seems that the school has everything going for it in order to gain credibility in the online education industry.
The school affords standalone courses, as well as a full program which leads to a high school diploma, with specific emphasis on courses in the ninth to twelfth grades. Its subject offerings are a bit limited though, with core areas including the staples of a high school curriculum (English, Science, Mathematics, Foreign Language Studies, Social Studies, and the Fine Arts). The subfields within each subject are limited as well; for instance, Foreign Language Studies carry Spanish as the only option. You’ll also have even fewer alternatives when it comes to electives – basics in psychology and sociology, or courses in computer applications like Microsoft Office.
Graduation requirements involve the completion of twenty-two units, with many courses considered as a half credit and fulfilled within eighteen weeks. The good thing is that the most credits from other schools are accommodated in Allied, for those intending to earn their diplomas in less time. You are considered as a full-time online student if you take more than three courses within every semester; as such, you are usually required to fulfill the basic requirements, including earning credit in Foreign Language Studies and other electives. If you intend to be career-ready as soon as you graduate, the school calibrates your program and includes courses which focus on enhancing specific job skills. Part-time study and summer classes are also offered.
Enrollment is ongoing throughout the year; you may enroll at an odd month and be the only new student, but since you generally take on your coursework on your own, you can opt not to interact with classmates if you don’t want to. The school encourages batch enrollees to stay in touch with each other though, through a web-based discussion board. Since each course is half a credit, and each credit is equal to a semester’s worth of courses, be prepared to shell out significant money if you want to go through the program starting from scratch. Each half credit costs 528 dollars, and if you intend to earn all of your credits from the school, this translates to a total of 23,000 dollars – a hefty price to pay for flexibility and convenience. However, the school affords financial assistance and installment programs, so you’ll be able to bear less of the financial burden than you have to. It’s best to earn most of your credits from traditional high schools, then make up for the others by enrolling at Allied National High.
