Orange Lutheran - A Diamond In the Rough

Orange Lutheran High School Online targets students who want to pursue spiritual development alongside their high school studies. Besides learning English, science and mathematics as a part of the high school curriculum students are obliged to study theology as well.
The OLO program at Orange Lutheran is far more interactive and beautifully structured compared to many other online high schools. However the downside of this school is that the coursework is not self paced and students are forced to be grouped in to classes and have to log in at definite times to participate in courses. This is a serious drawback and can become a major hindrance to any student. This point itself places this school far below in the list of recommended online high schools. Although students do get an opportunity to decide at what time they want to attend their classes. Nevertheless each course is of eight weeks and requires the regular participation of students at online discussion threads.
Even despite these limitations, as many as 93% of their graduates make it to a university or college to earn a college degree. The school also boasts of above average SAT scores and superior placements in English, Statistics and even European history. Moreover teachers are available for students who need extra help. 24 hour support is provided for academic and spiritual counseling. Parents are also informed of the child’s progress all throughout the courses, to ensure that they are involved in the education of their child.
The Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Lutheran Schools Accreditation Organization has qualified Orange Lutheran High School Online as one of the few legitimate online schools that provide quality education. Students must accomplish 26 credits to graduate out of which 4 are of theology and another 2 of physical science. Usually each course is accountable for half a credit. Hard working students who are willing to work all throughout the year take 3 years to complete the course while those who want summers off can finish it off in not longer than 4 years.
Admission to Orange Lutheran High School Online takes place throughout the year, however the school has stricter requirements than most online schools. You need good SOPs, excellent recommendations, solid interviews, a good placement test result and more to be actually selected to be part of their classes. Once admission has been finalized, late registrations from students will be accommodated and processed, but the child cannot join any of the sessions which have already started. They must wait for the next session to begin and each session is usually eight weeks long. If you have completed some courses from other schools, these will be credited by Orange Lutheran so that you do not need to go back and forth on your subjects; allowing students to graduate in time.
The tuition at Orange Lutheran is $300 per course. This only covers the tuition fees, and students may need to pay for books and other materials they will need for their classes. Parents have the option to pay in advance for every course, or pay the whole amount during their child’s admission.

Just a couple of clarifications:
1. Orange Lutheran Online students are NOT required to sign in at a specific time. They can sign in at any time they would like to, midnight to midnight everyday.
2.It is true that the work is not self paced. There are due dates every week. OLO has found that in a high school environment this is the best way to do this. While a lot of the students are self motivated, some need the structure of due dates. Otherwise, you end up with students who wait until the last week and can’t possibly do enough of the work to pass. OLO is very concerned with making sure their students succeed.
3. Placement tests and interviews are not needed to become an OLO student. You do need 3 recommendations (2 teachers, and either a minister or an extracurricular advisor/coach), and a statement of purpose. However, the statement of purpose is only a few sentences long. Students must have a 2.0 GPA, but it isn’t unheard of for OLO to accept students on probationary terms. OLO accepts almost 100% of students who apply. Their mission is to help as many students as possible to graduate high school.
