High School Online

Penn Foster High School is an online school which has both a full diploma program and also independent courses to offer for students of classes IX through XII. Penn Foster High School aims at improving basic academics, practical methods of study and vocational development so it is more suitable for those who are planning on improving their job prospects straight after schooling rather than preparing for college. This may not be favorable to many, as it hampers the overall educational development of a student who may be eligible to enter the university. Nevertheless, for students who do not plan to go to college, this is surely the way to go, at least that is how Penn Foster High School feels.

Another drawback of this school is the limited opportunities you get to play around with the courses and credits. Each student goes through the same course at the same level and also in the same order giving the school a rather monotonous environment. At the end of the diploma program the students get to choose from a group of five electives ranging from art, music, chemistry to Spanish and more importantly to job oriented courses like that of a home inspector or a teacher aide or even an electrician. This school is basically meant for those who aim at earning money straight off their school graduation degree.

Students get the opportunity to take examinations either over the internet or through snail mail. Support is available both via internet access and via telephone hotlines. Students also have access to online libraries, even a librarian for that matter, and other professionals who guide them on how to go about preparing for job interviews and the lot.

The Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools and the Distance Education and Training Council has given accreditation to Penn Foster High School. The curriculum for the high school diploma comprises of 21.5 credits; of which 5 are electives and 16 are standard classes. Students are given a period of three years to finish these credits. Although this time constraint does not speak well for the school, they reason that their students must be ready at an earlier time to be able to support themselves and their families. Credits from other schools are processed and accepted; unless they are from non-accredited online schools. So before you hand over your previous credits, make sure that your old school is accredited.

Penn Foster is one of the cheapest high schools in the country today. The full cost of the diploma program is just 1,295 USD including tuition, fees, books and other miscellaneous materials. Individual courses cost $219 each, and parents have the option to pay on a per course basis.

Quite interestingly, Penn Foster High School was actually born to Penn Foster Career School which is one of the oldest distance learning programs with the intention of helping coal miners learn their job back then in 1890. Amazing, right?
