Personalized Online Instructional Aids
There are evident flaws in the public school systems which are currently in place, and more often than not, they are necessary evils which the parent and high school child has two options for dealing with; either put up or shut up. Previously, homeschooling was an option which was considered as a last resort for parents who want to suffice their child’s specific needs, but recent advancements in homeschooling methods have led more and more parents to opt for the method of educating their child apart from the four corners of a traditional classroom. And with the advent of the internet, homeschooling has indeed gained the upper hand.
The internet is probably the biggest breakthrough which has been afforded for the home school advocate. The medium’s versatility and easy accessibility has made possible opportunities which are unavailable in a strict classroom setting. For instance, the programs and modules are very flexible; the parent or personal tutor can easily adjust the difficulty or length of completion of a task, based on the student’s current capabilities and on standardized evaluation methods. This is educational customization which is all but impossible in a class of twenty-or-so students.
Home School online programs also encourage the child to do more and be more, free from the worries of being able to fit the mold prescribed by their classroom teacher. They can move with ease between lessons, at their own pace, and finish the tasks in less time than usual, since they go through the modules at their own convenience. Online homeschool instructional aids are versatile; students can write a book, create a comic strip, make a map, put together a how-to aid, and best of all, create a personal daily journal which is easily manageable, accessible, and fun. And since parents are with the child on every step of the way, the latter’s progress is sufficiently guided and ensured.
This is not to say that the teaching techniques found in traditional classrooms are obsolete; rather, homeschooling is a viable option for students who want or are in need of a highly-individualized method for learning. The traditional tools for teaching are still used in homeschooling, not excluding text and workbooks, nature hikes, exposure field trips, and the like. But with homeschooling, the student’s every experienced is enhanced; first by the personal instruction, and second by an assortment of learning aids which are readily updated and very accessible.
Technology is helpful only if used in the right context in the educational process. While the child may be able to learn more with the help of an online computer, it is necessary for the parent to expose him or her to the ‘real’ environment as much as possible. Books are also a necessity which can never outlive its purpose. For this reason, the librarian is probably the student’s best friend, especially if the latter is homeschooled. In addition to the wealth of books which the library offers, a substantial amount of resources are also available in computer terminals, accessible and downloadable for home use, upon request. Homeschooling is constantly piling up on advantages over traditional instructional methods, and parents who are seriously considering on going for the former option are afforded with an easier and more effective choice, by going for the online home school alternative.
